Rams Spend $60,000 in Bonuses on Five Undrafted Players

With numerous roster spots to fill after the draft to reach the offseason limit of 90 players, the Rams got very busy signing undrafted free agents.

The most recent addition of Lindenwood wide receiver Andrew Helmick brought to 29 the number of undrafted players the Rams have signed. The Rams currently have 88 players on the roster, including their seven draft choices.

Of the 29 undrafted players, the Rams spent $75,600 in signing bonuses, with $60,000 of that going to five players. Tackle Braden Brown and safety Cody Davis each received $15,000 bonuses, while running back Benny Cunningham, and linebackers Phillip Steward and Jonathan Stewart each were paid $10,000... read more

Rams Wheel and Deal Again in First Round

For the second consecutive year, the Rams ended up being wheelers and dealers in the first round of the draft.

In 2012, the Rams first moved from the second overall pick to sixth in a trade with the Washington Redskins that netted them a second-round pick, plus first-round choices this year and in 2014.

They entered Thursday with picks at 16 and 22 in the first round and didn’t use either one. The fact they had the No. 22 choice from Washington emboldened them to trade up to eighth in the first round with Buffalo to select wide receiver Tavon Austin.

Doing that cost the Rams their second-round pick (46th overall) and seventh-round selection (222nd overall)... read more

Mock Draft: Who Each Team Should Select

Well, I held out long enough. You won’t see any Mock Draft 6.0 in this space. One is enough, but I profess to do it differently than many. After all, everyone loves to play general manager, so that’s the goal of this mock draft.

Rather than attempt to predict what a team will do, I prefer to say what each team should do. That does produce wild results, but then again, most mock drafts are far off anyway.

The one clear development is that I truly didn’t care much for what the choices were for the Rams when picks 16 and especially 22 arrived. It’s why I’m convinced the Rams will be doing everything in their power to trade down, perhaps with both selections in order to still get players they like while adding additional selections in later rounds... read more

Balzer: Contract Figures Revealed for Chris Williams

The Rams now have $3.77 million of salary-cap space, which reflects the restructured contract for defensive end Chris Long and the one-year deal signed by guard Chris Williams.

The Williams contract, agreed to three weeks ago but submitted to the NFL Monday, is worth $1.376 million and includes a signing bonus of $451,154. (For those wondering, Rams executive Kevin Demoff likes to have bonuses be the same numbers frontward and backward.)

The Rams consider Williams mainly a guard, and he is expected to have the opportunity to compete with Shelley Smith and Rokevious Watkins for the starting job at left guard, although the Rams could add to their guard depth in the draft... read more

Balzer: Rams Restructure Long's Contract

Finally. It has been assumed for some time the Rams would have to restructure at least one of their players with large cap numbers to clear room in order to potentially sign a veteran or two after the draft as well as their draft class.

So it was on Friday that defensive end Chris Long signed a new contract that converts $6 million of his guaranteed $13.25 million salary this year and makes it a roster bonus. Normally, a roster bonus fully counts against the cap in the year it is paid, but because the money is guaranteed it is prorated over the four years left on his contract.

The restructuring lowers Long’s cap charge by $4... read more

Balzer: Darian Stewart Signs for Less Than Tender

There were some raised eyebrows when Rams safety Darian Stewart was tendered as a restricted free agent at the beginning of the league year. The tender, $1.323 million, counted against the salary cap.

When Stewart signed on April 3, it was believed he had signed his tender. It turns out Stewart agreed to sign a deal for less money than the tender, apparently in exchange for guaranteed money in the form of a $300,000 signing bonus. His base salary is $700,000 and the deal includes $75,000 of incentives for interceptions, playing time and playoffs.

Stewart counts $1 million against the cap instead of $1... read more

Balzer: Rams Convinced Long is Glue to Hold Line Together

There's no question in Jeff Fisher's mind the Rams have added an elite left tackle to their roster with the signing of Jake Long. He knows Long has to stay healthy for that to happen, but Long is out to prove his injuries are behind him and he can go back to being the dominant player he was during his first three seasons in Miami.

"It was definitely frustrating," Long said Thursday when asked about playing injured the last two seasons and missing six games. "The last couple years, I've had to battle through some injuries and it definitely wasn't ideal, but I think I battled through them well... read more

Balzer: Jake Long Contract Details

Tackle Jake Long has the opportunity to make a lot of money if he plays all the seasons on his four-year contract with the Rams. However, the team also has some safeguards in the contract in the event injuries continue and his performance suffers, as it did the last two seasons in Miami. Long missed a total of six games the last two seasons, including four in 2012.

As originally advertised, Long’s deal is worth $34 million in base terms over four years. However, while $20 million could end up being guaranteed, as of now only $12 million is fully guaranteed. In reality, this is a two-year, $16 million contract... read more

Balzer: Details of Steven Jackson's New Contract

When running back Steven Jackson signed a three-year, $12 million contract with the Atlanta Falcons last week, there were those that questioned whether a team should pay that much money to a running back that will be 30 years old in July. Especially in Green Bay, a team that had interest in Jackson, but indicated the contract was too rich for them.

As usual, however, the devil is in the details of NFL contracts. As reported after he signed, Jackson received $4 million guaranteed in the deal. However, there are no guarantees beyond 2013. Jackson received a $3.5 million signing bonus, while $500,000 of his $1... read more

Balzer: Jake Long Agrees to Terms with Rams

NFL owners, executives and coaches are in Phoenix for the league meetings, and while there Sunday night the Rams completed a contract with Miami free-agent tackle Jake Long.

Initial reports say the deal is worth either $36 million or “up to” 36 million. That can be significant. When contract numbers are reported after agreements are consummated, the information comes from agents who want the deals to sound as high as possible.

Some agents will include incentives/performance bonuses in the total value, thus inflating the number. For consistency, the best way to report contracts is to simply include base terms like signing bonuses, roster bonuses, reporting bonuses and base salaries... read more

Balzer: Amendola Contract Not What Originally Advertised

As is often the case in the reporting of contracts, the deal wide receiver Danny Amendola signed with the New England Patriots is not what was originally advertised.

Widely circulated as a five-year contract worth $31 million, the total value is actually $28.5 million and $2.5 million of that are per-game roster bonuses of $31,250 that are included in each of the five years of the deal.

If Amendola is able to play all 16 games in a season, his total take from the roster bonuses would be $500,000. In the last two seasons with the Rams, Amendola played a total of 12 games; one in 2011 and 11 last season... read more

Balzer: Rams New Tight End Reunited with Fisher

Balzer: Best Available After Nine Hours of Free Agency

That was the essence of the official start of the 2013 NFL league year at 4 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday.

Within two hours, the Miami Dolphins struck quickly to upgrade their offense and defense, while the Indianapolis Colts reached agreement with five unrestricted free agents.

The biggest loser was the Baltimore Ravens, who within a 24-hour time period traded wide receiver Anquan Boldin to San Francisco and then lost linebackers Paul Kruger and Dannell Ellerbe as free agents. Kruger signed with Cleveland, while Ellerbe surprisingly went to Miami. The Dolphins, as expected, signed former Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace and later added linebacker Phillip Wheeler (Oakland)... read more

Balzer: Rams Make Another Adjustment to Jackson's Contract

The Rams and running back Steven Jackson made an adjustment in his contract Dec. 29 that moves the final year of signing bonus proration of $1.899 million from 2013 to the current league year. The 2013 league year begins March 12.

In the previous Sept. 8 renegotiation, the final year of his contract at $7 million would void if he was on the Rams roster five days after the Feb. 3 Super Bowl.

The most recent maneuver removes any roster requirement for the possible void and provides Jackson with sole control of the void. That allows the acceleration of the proration.

Balzer: Is This Jackson's Final Home Game?

Forgive Rams running back Steven Jackson if there are a swirl of emotions during Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings.

A win over Minnesota would keep alive the team's chances of making the playoffs, and would put them one victory away from having the first winning record in Jackson's nine seasons with the Rams.

Only twice this season have the Rams allowed a running back to gain at least 100 yards in a game: Seattle's Marshawn Lynch (20-118) and New England's Stevan Ridley (15-127). In the last three games, their opponent's leading running back hasn't reached 60 yards and in those games, Beanie Wells, Frank Gore and C.J. Taking that one step further, in the last three games, all of the opponent's running backs have totaled 175 yards on 64 carries (2.7 average).

The trend is easy to see: score more points, which leads to allowing fewer points, and there will be more winning. It’s borne out by the numbers from the last three seasons.

In 2009, the Rams scored 175 points (10... read more

Balzer: Rams Practice in London; Amendola Does Limited Work

There wasn’t much time for the Rams to do what is normally done after a typical game day in the NFL. That’s because about 28 hours after the 30-20 loss to the Packers, the team was on a plane to London to begin preparations for Sunday’s game against the New England Patriots.

They arrived early Tuesday morning and were quickly at an NFL Play 60 event with about 500 kids. Wednesday morning, it was business as usual as much as possible with a practice at the Arsenal soccer club facilities. Making the transition easier was the fact that owner Stan Kroenke also owns Arsenal... read more

Balzer: Packers Show Rams an NFL Offense

The Rams played a home game Sunday against Green Bay where it seemed half the building were Packers fans in a 30-20 loss. Now, the Rams head to London for a "home" game against the New England Patriots and another outstanding quarterback.

Tom Brady will be the opponent this week after Aaron Rodgers carved up the Rams for 342 yards on 30-of-37 passing with one of the incompletions a spike.

Linebacker James Laurinaitis could have been talking about Brady when he said of Rodgers, "I think what he does the best is that he's good at improv. He escapes to make the deep throws and maneuvers in the pocket... read more

Balzer: Givens Emerging as Deep Threat

With wide receiver Danny Amendola sidelined for at least another three games, there was understandable skepticism that the Rams' passing offense would be able to be productive with their leading pass-catcher unavailable.

Instead, on the road at Miami, quarterback Sam Bradford completed 26 of 39 passes for 315 yards, spreading the ball around to 10 different receivers. Of the 26 connections, 14 were to wide receivers.

Said coach Jeff Fisher, "Any time you have an injury, somebody steps up. In this case, we've got an entire group that has stepped up. They're interchangeable; the guys know the various positions and Sam's very comfortable... read more

Balzer: Jackson's Contract Voids Feb. 8 If He's On Rams Roster

Rams players voted running back Steven Jackson a captain this season, and he has often said he wants to retire a Ram. The question now is whether that will happen following a contract adjustment signed by Jackson on Sept. 8, one day before the start of the regular season.

While numerous reports Thursday evening said Jackson has the option of voiding the 2013 final year of his contract to become an unrestricted free agent, my sources indicate the void is automatic if Jackson is on the Rams roster five days after the Super Bowl, which would be Feb. 8.

Certainly, there is the possibility that his contract could be renegotiated again before Feb... read more

Balzer: Will Brockers Play Sunday?; Seahawks Run and Play Defense

If it was up to Michael Brockers, he would be on the field Sunday when the Rams play the Seattle Seahawks. But the Rams will make sure Brockers, who suffered a high ankle sprain, is ready just four weeks after the injury occurred on Aug. 30.

Perhaps impacting the decision is that the Rams will play two games in five days. Brockers' ability to stuff the inside against the run would be welcome against the Seahawks and running back Marshawn Lynch. Arizona, the opponent next Thursday, doesn't run the ball consistently, especially with power.

It's not out of the question that Brockers could see some snaps Sunday and then sit down until the Oct... read more

Balzer: How Bad Rams Have Been in Division Home Games

In five days starting Sunday, the Rams’ season could very well be defined. In a period of five days, the Rams will play two home games against division rivals Seattle and Arizona, currently two of the better defensive teams in the NFL.

No, that is not a misprint. The Seahawks and Cardinals, after three games, are two of the better defensive teams in football. Lost in the chaos of Monday’s night’s officiating debacle was just how good Seattle’s defense was against Green Bay. Balzer: A Woeful Day for Rams on Third Down ... and First Down

Every week in the NFL seemingly has a theme.

After the Rams’ Week 1 loss to Detroit, the debate was whether this was “the same ol’ Rams.” Some said it was, some said it wasn’t. The reality, clearly, is that one game is not enough to paint an entire picture.

Naturally, after the Week 2 win over Washington, it was thought to be a slam dunk that it wasn’t “the same ol’ Rams,” even though that game could have just as easily been lost as won.

So it was that the Rams laid an offensive egg in Chicago Sunday, losing 23-6, and gaining 160 yards in the process (2... read more

Balzer: Evidence of Jackson's Tight Groin; Morgan on Finnegan

The Rams begin preparing in practice Wednesday for the game against the Bears this weekend, but the buzz still remains from Sunday’s win over Washington on several levels.

First, there is the ongoing debate over running back Steven Jackson’s groin injury. Second, is the incompetent officiating from the game and the way the game ended with a 15-yard penalty against Redskins wide receiver Josh Morgan for throwing the ball at Rams cornerback Cortland Finnegan.

Starting with Jackson, I’ll admit to a bit of skepticism regarding the reality of Jackson’s injury against the conspiracy theorists that are totally convinced Jackson was benched by coach Jeff Fisher for spiking the ball when he was upset there was no touchdown signaled on the play in question... read more

Balzer: Specifics on New Contract for Linebacker James Laurinaitis

The five-year contract extension signed by Rams linebacker James Laurinaitis is worth a total of $42,219,960 and includes $23.62 million of guaranteed money. While his base salary of $620,000 remains the same for 2012, it is now guaranteed and Laurinaitis did receive a $2 million signing bonus.

The new money in the deal totals $41.5 million. He will also be paid $22 million in 2013 and 2014 in the form of a $1 million guaranteed salary in 2013, a $10 million salary in 2014, of which $9 million is guaranteed and an $11 million guaranteed roster bonus in 2013.

Balzer: Boudreau Will Try and Work Some Magic with This Offensive Line

Paul Boudreau has his work cut out for him.

It was going to be hard enough anyway, but after the Rams' numerous roster moves over the weekend, the team's offensive line coach is now trying to piece together an offensive line that will have someone starting at left guard Sunday against Detroit that hasn't had any snaps with the first team this summer at that position.

Consider this: Throughout the offseason OTAs and minicamps, Bryan Mattison got virtually all of the reps with the first unit at left guard. That was partly because Ojinnaka saw time at left tackle with Rodger Saffold not having been cleared for practice as he recovered from a pectoral injury that landed him on injured reserve last season... read more

Balzer: Salaries in for Haggan and Richardson

Both linebacker Mario Haggan and tackle Barry Richardson, unrestricted free agents signed by the Rams this past week, signed one-year contracts.

Haggan's deal is for the veteran minimum base salary of $825,000 for his years of service, plus a $65,000 signing bonus. Because it is considered a qualifying contract, the salary-cap charge is only $605,000.

Richardson's one-year deal is worth $800,000 and includes another $220,000 in incentives. His base salary is $700,000 and he also received a signing bonus of $100,000. It is believed the incentives are for games started, and explains why the $220,000 also counts against the Rams' salary cap... read more

Balzer: Injuries Affect Participation in OTAs

The Rams had their second OTA of the week Wednesday, whichw as open to the media. The Tuesday OTA was closed. There will also be an open OTA Friday. This year, as per terms of the new CBA, the total OTAs have been reduced from 14 to 10.

Some players didn't participate Wednesday because of injuries:

*Left tackle Rodger Saffold did not participate in the team portion of the May 16 practice. Saffold is returning from pectoral surgery, and coach Jeff Fisher said, "He's still not been officially cleared by the medical staff as a result of the pec injury. But, he's very, very close... read more

Balzer: Rams Add Veterans Haggan and Richrdson

In time for OTAs, the Rams added veteran linebacker Mario Haggan and tackle Barry Richardson. Haggan becomes the oldest player on the team's roster at 32 and is a candidate to be the strong-side linebacker.

Richardson started all 16 games at right tackle for the Chiefs the last two seasons, but Kansas City only wanted him back as a swing tackle.

Said Richardson, "That would not be a good situation, going from starter to backup there."

Asked about the additions, coach Jeff Fisher said, "Barry just gives us an opportunity to line up a big man at the right tackle spot and gives us some depth there... read more

Balzer: Rams Say D-Line Now One of Strongest Units on Team

Coach Jeff Fisher loves what he has in first-round pick Michael Brockers.

Said Fisher, "Michael, he's a big man. At 322 pounds he's explosive, he's very instinctive. For not having played, for not being a four-year starter, he's very, very instinctive. He can play across the face of blocks, he pushes the pocket, he can collapse, he can get on an edge, he plays with effort. I mean, what else can you say? And there's so much more ahead of him. He's going to develop into a fine player.

"And he's an outstanding young man, great character guy, hard worker. He's the complete package, now... read more

Balzer: Wheeling and Dealing Nets Rams Three Second-Round Picks

To assess the first day of the Rams' draft, it's necessary to go deeper than to simply evaluate the selection of Louisiana State defensive tackle Michael Brockers in the first round.

What the Rams accomplished must be viewed from within the prism of where they were as the new league year approached in mid-March.

With the second choice in the first round, general manager Les Snead and coach Jeff Fisher knew they had a precious commodity because of the obvious knowledge that quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III would be first two picks in the draft.

In unprecedented fashion, the Rams were able to engineer a deal with Washington that was completed before the start of the league year and landed them with the sixth pick in the first round, a second-round choice (39th overall) as well as first-round picks in 2013 and 2014... read more

Balzer: My Memories of Joel Buchsbaum

I was on with Joel Buchsbaum for a couple years on shows at KMOX in the early 1980s. The quirkiest thing that few people realize is his name was always pronounced name wrong as "BUSHbaum" instead of BUCHS (like BUCKS)baum. It's spelled Buchsbaum (not Buschbaum).

So, we were on together one Sunday evening with the host Bill Wilkerson, and Bill introduced Joel as he had for however number of years he had been on. For whatever reason, Joel picked that night to interrupt Bill and he said with his Brooklyn twang, "Hold it, Bill. It's BUCKSbaum, not BUSCHbaum. Wilkerson, without missing a beat, said, "Joel, it's been BUSCHbaum for this long and BUSCHbaum it's going to stay... read more

The Legend of Joel Buchsbaum

I came across this story today from JoeBucsFan.com. Many people here in St. Louis have great memories of Joel Buchsbaum and his appearances on KMOX Radio. This story appeared last year, but they have run it again and say they will do so going forward every year on the first day of the draft.

A little bit later, I will relate some classis Joel stories from my own personal experiences.

Joe’s going to go slightly personal here, a rare albeit tiny window into Joe’s background.

On this holiest of high football holidays, Joe got hooked on the draft as a kid from an alien-like voice that carried through the night air from a city Joe has to this day never visited and isn’t sure will ever get there... read more

Balzer: Snead Likes Job Scouting Department Has Done

When Les Snead came to the Rams as general manager, he had a lot of personnel evaluators to get to know. Wednesday, the day before the draft, Snead said the work the department has done has been impressive.

Said Snead, "The whole department; you know some of them because this is a small league. Some you don't. I think just like in any business, they have a job to do. They've been doing it, and the final presentation of their evaluation on the player, that's the best resume they could have. It's neat in that you don't know anybody. They're not really trying to tell either Jeff or I what we want to hear... read more

Balzer: Fisher Looks to Silence Jackson Speculation

The speculation was fueled by a report on NFL Network that Rams running back Steven Jackson is unhappy with his contract, leading to even more chatter that Alabama running back Trent Richardson could be the team’s target in the first round Thursday night.

Of course, Jackson isn’t talking and the Rams says they have heard nothing from Jackson’s camp about improving or extending a deal that will pay him $7 million in each of the next two seasons.

So, is there smoke or just a smokescreen? Asked at a pre-draft press conference Wednesday about the rumors, coach Jeff Fisher said, “I think you stated it accurately: rumors... read more

Balzer: Jason Smith Signs Restructured Contract

Throughout the offseason, the expectation has been that, at some point, something would happen with Rams tackle Jason Smith’s contract.

It finally did Tuesday (April 17), the day the Rams’ first minicamp under coach Jeff Fisher opened. Smith participated at the minicamp, taking the reps at right tackle, and it was clear Fisher was subtly revealing more about Smith than initially realized when the coach said after being asked about him, “Yeah, he’s good. He’s been here, he’s been working. He’s been working very well inside and his condition level is excellent... read more

Balzer: Clemens On Field After Signing Minimum Salary Contract

Quarterback Kellen Clemens was on the practice field for the Rams Wednesday on the second day of the team's two-day minicamp and was glad for the opportunity.

Because of Clemens' experience with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer when they were both with the Jets, Clemens is familiar with the offense being installed.

Clemens admitted it was difficult during the last month as he saw the Rams considering other quarterbacks, but he said, "You have to try not to think about that and hope you get the chance."

So it was that Clemens signed a one-year contract Tuesday worth $710,000 that includes a $10,000 signing bonus... read more

Balzer's Rams Notebook: Injured Players from 2011 Practice

Rams coach Jeff Fisher went a little Bill Belichick on the media Tuesday when he was asked after practice if any players were held out totally because they were returning from surgery.

Fisher laughed and said, “You know, I’ll have an injury report for you on September 5.”

However, Fisher did reveal that defensive end William Hayes, recently signed as a free agent, had an offseason shoulder “procedure” and added, “He’s not quite 100 percent, but he will be there very quickly.” Hayes said he had issues with his labrum and rotator cuff but claimed not to be limited at all... read more

Balzer: Fisher Glad to be On the Field Coaching Again

This is what Jeff Fisher has been waiting for, ever since he walked away from the Tennessee Titans after the 2010 season.

He knew he would be back. He knew he would be coaching on a football field again. He just didn’t know where.

Fisher obviously knows now. There he was Tuesday along with 59 players and numerous coaches on a sun-splashed day at Rams Park as the team held the first of two days of practices in an extra minicamp allowed because he is a new coach with the Rams. To be sure, it felt good.

“This is what’s fun,” Fisher said. “This is what I missed and this is where we all belong is out here getting better... read more

Balzer: Several NFL Teams Busy Monday as Most Offseason Programs Begin

STORY UPDATED Monday night

When the 2012 NFL league year began on March 13, there were 41 restricted free agents (RFA). Those are players with three accrued seasons that were tendered by their team.

With four days remaining until the April 20 deadline for any of those players to receive an offer from another team, there are now just 13 unsigned RFAs after nine re-signed with their teams Monday.

Several teams were busy Monday as offseason programs opened for most teams that don’t have new head coaches. In addition to the nine RFAs that signed, 13 exclusive-rights free agents (ERFA) also re-signed... read more

Balzer: Rams Minicamp Set for This Week

As the Rams begin the third week of their offseason program, a voluntary minicamp has been scheduled for Tuesday and Wednesday this week.

On each day, players will practice for 75 minutes beginning at 11 a.m. This will be the first opportuinity for coach Jeff Fisher and his staff to see the team in live work. The Rams are permitted to have an extra minicamp because they have a new head coach.

Many eyes will be on returning injured players, especially tackle Jason Smith, who has started just 26 of a possible 48 games in his three years with the team. While speculation was rampant that Smith could be released or asked to take a pay cut before the start of the league year, he remains on the roster with a salary-cap charge of more than $13 million... read more

Howard Balzer column: A different view of 'bountygate'

By Howard Balzer, Lindyssports.com NFL analyst   The NFL world remains in a lather over “Bountygate,” which begs the question: Why do we simply attach the word “gate” to controversies like these? Are we still stuck on Watergate, which, of course, was the name of a hotel? That wasn’t a story about water, was it?   Oh, well, let’s move on.   The one important thing missed in all of this is that the bravado and locker-room culture that has been brought to light in the Saints’ situation is essentially not much different than what goes on in defensive locker rooms every week in the NFL... read more

That news had to make heads spin and eyes bug out. After all, who would have ever imagined that RG3 would run fast at In Indianapolis? Later, the 4.41 was supposedly registered as "the official" time when in actuality there is no such thing as an "official" time.
